Brett A. Murray’s years at Kansas Wesleyan University played a defining role in shaping both his career and his character. He graduated with a B.A. in Communications with Honors, was a multiple Dean’s List honoree, and built a foundation there that went far beyond academics. His time at Wesleyan helped shape him as a communicator, leader, teammate, and builder.
As a varsity athlete, Brett was a member of the 2000 KCAC Conference Championship team and the NSCAA National Championship team, experiences that left a lasting mark on him. Those years taught him discipline, accountability, and the value of being part of something bigger than himself. In 2017, he was inducted into the Kansas Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame, an honor that carried special meaning because of how much the university had already meant in his life.
Brett immersed himself in campus life. He served on Student Council, was elected Junior Class President, and embraced opportunities to lead wherever he could. During college, he also worked in radio, first at KINA 910 AM and later at KSAL 1150 AM, the same station where Paul Harvey got his start. Those early years in broadcasting, both during college and shortly after, helped sharpen his instincts as a storyteller and communicator. They taught him how to think quickly, speak clearly, and connect with people in a way that felt real.
He also helped build a television station on campus, something that reflected his hands-on approach and genuine love for media. Brett did not just want to study communications. He wanted to be in the middle of it, helping create it. He also served as a lecture professor in several classes, which gave him an early opportunity to teach, mentor, and share what he was learning with others.
Some of his favorite memories from college came in his writing courses with Dr. Roesner. She introduced him to the classics, and those classes opened up a deeper appreciation for literature, language, and timeless storytelling. That influence stayed with him and continues to shape the way he thinks and writes.
After his years in radio, Brett moved into oil and gas, carrying with him the same work ethic, communication skills, and practical mindset that had served him well from the start. Though the industry changed, the foundation did not: relationships matter, leadership matters, and clear thinking matters.
His connection to Kansas Wesleyan did not end after graduation. From 2020 through 2024, Brett served on the Board of Trustees for his alma mater, sitting on both the Finance Committee and the Athletics Committee. It was a meaningful way to give back to a place that had invested so much in him, and a reflection of the loyalty he has always felt toward the university.
Brett’s story is rooted in gratitude—for the mentors who helped shape him, the teammates and colleagues who challenged him, and the opportunities that allowed him to grow. Kansas Wesleyan was not just part of his past. It remains part of who he is.
