Brett A. Murray is currently the Chief Operating Officer and President for MERCO LLC. Mr. Murray previously held a Board Seat for Virtus Oil and Gas Corporation where he was also Chief Operating Officer/EVP from May 2014-May 2020. The company purchased Tidewater Oil and Gas assets from bankruptcy under Murray's direction where he was responsible for putting together the US team of engineers, geologists, landmen and techs. Prior to Virtus he was with Gunnison Energy Corporation an Oxbow Company owned by William Koch in 2012 and spent two years as part of his Senior Management Team overseeing over 150+K net acres with multiple midstream facilities. Prior to GEC, Mr. Murray spent time with Phil Anschutz’s private company, Anschutz Exploration Corporation where he was heavily involved in the $1.4B divestiture of the company’s Southern Bakken properties to Occidental Petroleum and as well as its $114MM Northern Bakken property sale to Crescent Pointe Energy. Murray went to work at Sundance Energy, Inc. helping the small Australian Listed company go from a $5mm debt loan to arrive at the pinnacle of a $492mm USD Market Cap in 2008, and was promoted to Land Manager at age 27. While at Sundance, he was involved with multiple divestitures and business development of nearly 150,000 acres and near $80MM in transactions. At Anadarko Petroleum Corporation he was a company landman that worked on curative issues before drilling in the DJ Basin. His private company has brokered and closed multiple deals in the last few years as well as Senior Advisor to Juniper Capital and Greehey & Co while consulting for Extraction Oil & Gas and Matador Resources. Murray has over 16 years experience (12 as Senior Management) in the energy industry for some of the most reputable companies in the industry and has been recognized multiple times amongst his peers.
Murray earned a B.A. in Communications from Kansas Wesleyan Universit. He was a Varsity Letterman in basketball and also a member of the 2000 KCAC Conference Champions and NSCAA Champions. He was involved with Student Council and was Junior Class President. While in college and shortly after, Murray was Operations Manager for Morris Communications in Salina, KS overseeing forty-four employees in three locations. Murray was a previous winner of Wesleyan’s Outstanding Communication Student and has continued to give back to the program.
